Text Box: Probably  our volunteer with the most varied experience, Joan Martin has been an active volunteer since she  stopped  Nursing.   She has  served as Cancer Volunteer,  spent time as a Hospice volunteer; and worked at  a hospital gift shop.
Text Box: Text Box: for 10 years. She makes sure flyers for the Purchase a Miracle  campaign are delivered, and participates in other fund raisers.  Joan has also been the chaplain  for the local chapter  of  D.A.R.
“My heart melts a little when I hear of the various Text Box: Joan  Kennedy began her  volunteering with scouting.  Early on  she  experienced the care  given at Children’s Orthopedic  now Children’s Hospital.   Seeing the need for uncompensated  care, she volunteers with the Des Moines  Guild. Text Box: Meet our Volunteers! 
Text Box: nursing.  The  City of  Des Moines was advertising for candidates for a Senior Citizen Advisory board.  Georgie applied and ended up serving two terms and then moving to the Legacy Board.  
Currently she is the volunteer coordinator for a Horticultural group  at the Senior Center.  They meet every Friday to hear speakers or tour garden oriented sites.  Usually they combine a  lunch out with the tours.   Georgie needs to think ahead in this job.  Plans must be Text Box: made from 3-6 months ahead in order to get into the Des Moines Calendar.
One of the fun things she has done at the center was to  assist in painting bus shelters in the area.  Groups talked with an artist about their  design; the artist blocked it out and then  the volunteers painted.  You can see Georgie’s work on First Avenue just south of  John Knox Church on the east side of the road.  Why does she do it?  It’s FUN!
Text Box: Georgie Nupen began her volunteer career like many of us with Cub Scouts.  After she retired she knew she needed to do something positive with her time so she looked for something outside the field of

Currently you can find her helping with lunch at the Des Moines Senior Center or  on the food distribution line at the Des Moines Food Bank.

The most fun was at the gift shop., and the food bank.  Joan enjoys being around other people who are appreciative.  She mys that helping others makes you feel good too!

Volunteering  makes both the volunteer and the one who is served feel   better!
