Adam Caudillo to participate in Ecuador Mission Trip

The team will be in Ecuador from August 8-20. They will fly into Quito, travel South to Shell-Mera, where they will stage their flight/trip to the Mashient Village. Shell-Mera is located in the province of Pastaza. It's the last point on the road east before the jungle starts and runs 2000 miles to Brazil. The Mashient Village is located over the East Andes Mountains in the Amazon Jungle, East of Quito and roughly 500 miles south of the Equator near the border of Peru. Mashient is an Achuar Tribe, the village land is located in the Province of Pastaza on the Mashient River which runs into a larger river [equivalent to the Mississippi] called the Pastaza River.

The team will be staying and working at a Mashient Bible Camp, near the village. The plan is to work alongside and fellowship with the people while enjoying their culture and what the Lord Jesus is doing in Ecuador. The main focus will be building maintenance/construction and a runway extension for MAF pilots.

The group will be accompanied by Lloyd and Linda Rogers and their son Dan, who have been building the Lord's church in Ecuador for many years. Please pray for our Ecuador team: Bryan and Carole Johnson, Parker Johnson, Jeff Riley, Ciara Clemmons, Hannah Holmes, Lorna Jeffers, Brendan Hughes, Ben Sauerlender, Nathan Hart, Adam Caudillo, Cooper Johnson and Spencer Johnson.

Weinberg plans “Tumekutana” first Conference for African Women

Word has come from Caryl Weinberg that the African Women's Leadership Conference, "Tumekutana" or We Have Come Together, is actually coming together. In September Christian women representing African partners of Presbyterian Church (USA) will come together in Nairobi Kenya. The first group of its kind, these representatives from 18 African countries will have an opportunity to share their experiences with each other and to learn from each other about their fight against AIDS and their mutual struggles.

Presbyterian Women (PCUSA) has allocated $30,000 for the conference, but women like Monique, who coordinates women’s initiative groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo must find their own way to travel to and from Nairobi. (Our own women’s association has been contributing to the support of the BOMOKO group and has contributed toward room and board for one woman.) You can help by praying for the success of the conference and for the safe travel of the participants. Information about other contributions to the conference is on the bulletin board.

Missions in Africa - Missionary: The Boyd Family

Boyds carry on Presbyterian mission in Africa

In January, the session voted to adopt Jeff and Christi Boyd in place of Caryl Weinberg who is no longer able to live in Africa.

The Boyds represent the Presbyterian Church USA in Yaounde, Cameroon. They serve through the invitation of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon, the same church that Caryl Weinberg worked with. Jeff works with schools, teacher training and setting goals in Cameroon, Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Rwanda. Jeff has developed “The Africa Game”, mission education game for children and adults in the USA.

Christi is companionship facilitator for Presbyterian Hunger Program’s “Joining Hands” initiative in Cameroon. She works with Cameroonian mainstream churches, non-governmental organizations and grass roots groups to establish the national network and assist in developing a program to address hunger related issues.

She also connect this network with the Presbyteries of Chicago and Twin Cities Area.

The couples three children, Matthias, Salome, and Naomi attend the American School of Yaounde.

2006 Mission giving
supports local causes;
Session finds new African ministry for 2007

Chaplain Tim Klerekoper joins Hospitality House, Church of Mary Magdalene and the Marcus Whitman Emergency Fund as a recipient of the local mission funds designated in 2006. Each organization received $400.

Chaplain Klerekoper works with the Des Moines Police and Fire departments through the Charteris Foundation. In times of crisis he is there to help. During the past few months he has assisted families who have lost a child to SIDS, three families dealing with suicide and the employees of a business where an employee was found hanged. He has officiated at several funeral services which gives him the opportunity to work with families who often have not yet been introduced to the Gospel. One of the most valuable, but hardest services is helping families of police officers who have been killed while on duty.

The Charteris Foundation has 9 full time and 10 part time chaplains working mostly in western Washington. The foundation is entirely supported by contributions which are used to pay the Chaplains salaries and expenses. All bookkeeping, accounting, and administrative help are also volunteer.

News from Mano Con Mano in Guatemala

Bill and Sue Jones write from Guatemala that ninety-five per cent of the women and children enrolled in the feeding program are doing amazingly well. They are searching for a nutritionist who might be willing to give advice through the internet and help with menus for the more difficult 5 per cent. Do you know anyone who might fit this need?

Brennan and Maria Jose Doyle, have agreed to join MCM as missionaries, and will be overseeing the MCM Guatemala ministry. Brennan has been a missionary in Guatemala for 6 years. Maria Jose, his wife, is Guatemalan and "happens to be" the architect that designed the feeding center.

They will give Bill and Sue the help they have been praying for, and an opportunity for a furlough. For this to happen, they need the nutritional program to be running smoothly, jobs transitioned to others, and their house sold. Please keep them in your prayers and rejoice with them as they see their efforts making a difference

FAREWELL

Howard Seal's gone home

On Thursday, Sept 13th, 2007, Howard Seal finally met the Lord he had served faithfully for 86 years Howard was so much a part of this congregation and the church building that it is hard to believe he is gone. We see his work every time we turn on a light or use the kitchen appliances. Many of us were privileged to have his advice if not hands on help in our homes. His biggest mark on our congregation was his teaching skill. When Howard taught, Bible study attendance soared. During the later part of his life he began a video lab helping to put the photographic history of the church together. While this project is yet unfinished, Howard taught his assistants well, and we expect it to be ready by our Golden Anniversary.
Howard kept us laughing with his quiet remarks from behind and his story telling. He will be sorely missed by his wife Helen, his daughter Marsha, sons Vince & Paul and their wives and families, and by this whole congregation.

School Supply Drive

Supplies for Parkside made a hit!
Deacons Billie Kelley and Vera Harper delivered half a pickup load of pencils, paper, crayons, glue sticks, markers, erasers, folders, notebooks and back packs to Parkside school just in time for school to begin. In addition, a check for $190 was delivered to allow for purchase of needed supplies or classroom periodicals. Many many thanks to everyone who donated. If you wish to claim this donation on your income tax a thank you slip can be obtained from the
Church office. Please attach your sales slip to the form. IRS is getting picky!

Neighbors invited to use our Parking Lot For their garage Sales August 11, 2007   9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Will the neighborhood's trash turn into new friends for Marcus Whitman? That is the hope for our Neighborhood Parking Lot sale on August 11th. The church will furnish the place, tables and some publicity.
There is no charge for a space, but sellers must sign up to get a table. First come, first reserved.
The church will sponsor a bake sale table, so our cooks are asked to contribute their specialties. Hot dogs and cold drinks will be for sale in the kitchen. We will need volunteers for this too.
The computer lab will be set up for kids to try out. Other groups such as Women of the Cloth, the choir, Women's study etc. are invited to have representatives to answer questions about the church and it's activities. Please volunteer and help Outreach make this a success.
